I will be forever grateful that Phil Butcher was my Dad. He was one of the best parts of my childhood. Growing up we had a nice home with a swimming pool in an upper-middle class neighborhood. My three sisters and I went to good schools, had nice clothes and went on great vacations with “Poopsie” (Dad’s Grand Canyon road trip nickname 😊). As far as I can remember, we never wanted for anything. We even gained an older brother, Mark. Dad worked hard to give us these things because he loved us. There’s no doubt we got lucky and hit the “Dad” jackpot when our mother married Phil!

I remember that, upon introduction to Dad’s acquaintances through the years, many would comment, “Your girls look just like you.” His face would light up with that contagious grin of his and he never corrected them.

In 1977 Dad legally adopted “his girls,” giving us his name. He didn’t have to do that because, for all intents and purposes, he was already our Dad and had been for over 10 years. He did it because he loved us as if we were genetically his own children and we loved him right back! I can still see his face at the courthouse that day...he was so happy and proud. Me too!

I left home the following summer for Basic Training and, though Dad never said the words, I knew he was sad that I was leaving and that he would miss me (perhaps because I kept him on his toes? 😉). We never spoke of it, but I think he knew in his heart that I would not be returning to San Diego.

I love my Dad…he holds a special place in my heart and, like he has for many years, he will continue to live on in my heart for the rest of my days.

I will be forever grateful…

You were the best Dad I could ever have hoped for. Though I've missed you being a part of my life since I left home and moved to Texas, you were always in my heart. I'm blessed by having been raised by you and being your daughter, not by blood, but by choice. I love you Dad! Blessings to all whose life he touched and were lucky to know this wonderful man.
