I met Karla on the telephone. She was in charge of the Imperial County court calendar and we had the occasion to talk frequently. After about 3 years, one day she walked into my office and said “Hi, I’m Karla and I’ve moved to San Diego “. And that was the start of our friendship. We had many good times and worked through hard times together....law school, divorce, aging parents and family deaths. When I moved far away, we still remained close. Karla visited me many times and eventually I started spending winters with her.

We used to joke that we were probably the only people in the world who didn’t begrudge paying back our school loans....after all that’s how we got to where we were. She loved her job and she saw those she prosecuted as people, not just defendants. She worried about them and tried with all her might to be fair and compassionate.

Karla was very excited about her upcoming retirement next summer. She saw her future as being involved with animals....she wanted to get Max certified as a therapy dog. She wanted to travel and see the country and spend some summer months with me in Italy.

She is gone far to soon and will be immensely missed. Rest In Peace, dear Karla....and don’t worry about Max...he is with his beloved Aunt Stacey and best friend, Sansa.
Ciao, my friend.

Karla was a class act, one of the fairest prosecutors I have known. She opposed me in three cases recently and was always very fair and compassionate with my clients. I was surprised to learn her age. She was so energetic, beautiful, and vibrant. I wish the best to all of her close friends and family. I am sure it must be tough right now. But she left a legacy here in the legal community and helped return several of my clients to a good path their life. She will not be forgotten.

My deepest condolences to Karla's family. I worked with her in Imperial County, she was a vibrant, beautiful woman and an excellent attorney too. We remained in contact when she came to San Diego via text, calls and Facebook. She loved her place in SD and really had a zest for life. Her smile and her laughter were contagious. She is gone way too soon. Beverly Barrett
