Albert L. Schlapfer (Gus) passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 4, 2021.
He was one of twelve children, nine boys and three girls. Born on a family farm/nursery in Arlington, Nebraska on January 15, 1927.
After graduating high school he enlisted in the Army/ Air Force as a Historian/Photographer and achieved A.P.S status. He fought in both World War II and the Korean War.
After being honorably discharged he purchased part ownership of L. and L. Printers in 1959. Later in the 1960's he sold his partnership to become a State Farm Insurance Agent. During this time he was involved in the area Little Leagues, Girl Scouts and bowling leagues.
He furthered his education by attending SDSU and achieved his Master Gardeners Degree. He became a member and sat on the board of directors of the San Diego Epiphyllum Society. He propagated several species of the epiphyllum, including the one he named after himself, "Mr. Gus".
He is preceded in death by his wife of almost 60 years, Marge.
Gus leaves behind his daughter Susan, son Steven, Many grand and great-grand children as well as nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
Albert (Gus) will receive Military Honors and be placed with his wife at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery on Friday August 13, 2021 at 9:30am. Call 619-583-2084 for further instructions.
