It is with truly heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Allan M. Hodge, affectionately known as “Tony,” who died peacefully in his sleep on July 5, 2024. He was 89 years old and a proud native of San Diego.
Tony was the son of Robert E. Hodge and Fern L. Hodge, along with sisters Barbara and Fern. He married Geraldine (Gerry) Ottonello on December 1, 1962.
Tony fell in love with the ocean at a young age, and his passion for the sea led him to become a lifelong member of the San Diego Yacht Club, a membership he cherished. After college, he served in the Army from 1960 to 1963 as part of the 32nd infantry division, primarily stationed in Louisiana. Upon being honorably discharged and returning home, Tony worked for his father's business, Golden Arrow Dairy, where he was responsible for procuring alfalfa feed for over 2,000 dairy cattle.
During this time, Tony and Gerry lived in Imperial Valley and met many people, forming long-lasting friendships. In 1966, they moved into a home in San Diego, where Tony would live for the remainder of his life. In 1971, Tony and Gerry started their own family business together—Hodge Products, Inc.—which continues today. Tony, an inventor, authored many patents throughout his life, and the business was centered around his custom parts and solutions in the solid waste industry. He was consistently at the forefront of technological advancements, incorporating an IBM computer into the company as early as 1982.
Tony dedicated the last four years of his life to caring for Gerry, his wife of over 60 years, who was suffering from dementia. His profound commitment to her was unwavering, caring for her with selfless devotion until she passed on October 19, 2023 (https://www.featheringillmortuary.com/obituaries/geraldine-hodge).
Tony is survived by his son, Anthony; his daughter, Angela; his daughter-in-law, Joan; and his grandchildren, Zach and Riley. To them he was called Papa. A cryptside service will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in San Diego on Thursday, July 18, 2024 at 10:00 AM. Family and friends are welcome to attend.
