Beverley Diane Bennitt
December 28, 1942 — November 9, 2020
On the morning of Nov. 9, Beverley Diane Bennitt’s sun set for the final time, but her brilliant light will be with her family and many friends forever. She passed peacefully, with her loving husband, daughter and grandson by her side.
Diane was born in Kansas City, Missouri on Dec. 28, 1942. She was raised in Hollydale, California, and, like all amazing Navy wives, traveled and lived around the world, moving 24 times while anchoring her husband’s 35 year Navy career. Diane and her family have lived in Coronado, on and off, since 1996.
Throughout her Navy spouse career, she was devoted to the support of Navy families, while serving as an active volunteer for the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. Having served as a coordinator of volunteers, chairperson of the Washington DC Navy Ball (raising more than $200,000 for the support of Navy and Marine Corps families), and as a member of the Society’s Board of Directors, she was the first recipient of the Society’s Grace Glenwood Higginson Lifetime Achievement Award. The award citation read, in part, “...she was a shining example of altruism, compassion and humility.” Whether camping out in 15 degree weather with her daughter’s Girl Scout Troop, motoring across the lonely barrens of Turkey on her way to a rendezvous with her husband in Ankara, or standing on a rickety pier in Mombasa, Kenya waiting to greet her ‘sailor’, she was the epitome of an upbeat, selfless, courageous, classy lady who brought joy to everyone around her.
While her third battle with cancer proved to be ‘unwinable,’ in the end, she never stopped fighting. She touched countless lives over the span of many giving years and she will remain a beacon of hope, courage and caring for all of those who knew her.
Diane is survived by her devoted husband, Vice Admiral Brent Bennitt, USN (ret); her loving daughter, Sarah; her cherished grandson, Wesley; and her identical twin sister,
Mary.
Because of COVID-19 restrictions, her viewing is limited to immediate family only. A Celebration of Life and internment will be held at the U.S. Naval Academy in the spring of 2021.
In lieu of flowers Diane would request a loving donation to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.
