CAROLYN SHAFER'S EULOGY
February 8, 1951 – March 26, 2024
Carolyn Alice Shafer was born February 8, 1951 to her parents Charles & Evelyn
Hall. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at the age of
five. She is a native of San Diego and graduated from Crawford High School in
1969 and was awarded Musician of the Year. She majored in Music and Minored
in Spanish at SDSU and graduated in 1976, Magna Cum Laude.
Carolyn and Gary were married on June 8, 1974. They met in 1969 in a musical
group called “The Spurrlows” and toured the nation. She attended Trinity College
and played keyboard for the “Crimson Bridge.” Upon returning home to San Diego
she became music director of Youth for Christ. She also developed six choirs for
her home church, Covenant Presbyterian, between 1974-1978. In 1976 she and
Gary toured across the USA with the “Second Chapter of Acts” participating in
Jimmy Owens musical “If My People.”
In June 1978 they joined the missionary ship “MV Doulos” with Operation
Mobilization and circumnavigated South America three times and moved into
Spain from 1985-1995 where they served as church planters in Blanes, (Gerona),
Spain. While serving on the ship their three children were born in Bridgetown,
Barbados (David 1979), Lima, Peru (Carey 1980) and Lisbon, Portugal
(Jonathan1985).
Upon return to San Diego in 1995 Carolyn taught 5th & 6th grades for some 20
years at Horizon Elementary School. She also formed a small group that
ministered in several church women's conferences. She played keyboard on a
number of worship teams and lastly joined the Foothills Christian Church worship
team for the past seven years.
In 2005 Carolyn had breast cancer and was in remission for some 17 years. In
July 2022 a dormant cell metastasized to her bones and left lung which resulted in
her death.
She is survived by her husband Gary Shafer, brother Richard Hall, her children
David Shafer, Carey Flores (married to Triny Flores) and Jonathan Shafer (married
to Gina Realmuto) and her grandchildren Isabel, Triny Jr, and Manuel Flores and
David Samuel, Sofia and Emily Shafer.
She will be greatly missed and we look forward as believers to being reunited with
her in heaven.
