Charlene McCarthy

Charlene was born on November 15, 1927 in Oskaloosa, Iowa and passed away on October 29, 2018 in San Diego, California at age 90. She was a wife, Mom, Grandma, and friend.

Charlene was the youngest of four children born to William and Maude Young. She graduated from high school in 1945, took a graduation trip to San Diego and never returned home. She married Patrick (Mac) McCarthy on February 27, 1949. They were married for 55 years and raised three daughters together.

Charlene was a homemaker and very active in her daughter’s lives serving as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and room mom. She proudly worked the polls every election for many years.

Charlene is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jody (Mike) Denton of Garner, NC and grandchildren Stephanie (Paul) Crawford of McKinney, TX and Jonathan (Ashley) Denton of Raleigh, NC. She is also survived by grandchildren Sarah (Sam) Ward and JJ Buie, and son-in-law Larry Grimm all of San Diego, CA. as well as three nieces and two nephews. Charlene was predeceased by her husband, Patrick McCarthy, her daughter Patt McCarthy Au, and her daughter Susan Grimm. Also her father William and mother Maude Young, as well as her sisters Margaret Malin of San Diego, CA, Pearle Graham Wilson of Oskaloosa, IA, brother Joe Young of Dayton, NV, two nieces and one nephew.

Cremation is planned. At her request, there will be no service. Donations may be made in Charlene’s name to Kindred Hospice, 9444 Balboa Ave. Suite 290, San Diego, CA 92123. We would like to give a special thank you to Nurse Susan and Aide Jennifer from Kindred Hospice who did an amazing job of taking care of Charlene the past eight months.
