Obituary for Christine Maches

Anne Christine Tempest Brown Maches, known to all as Chris Maches, passed peacefully surrounded by family in La Mesa, CA on April 1, 2018. She was 86.

Chris was born to Forrest Sr. and Anna Brown in Philadelphia on March 2, 1932, with her twin brother George Steele Tempest Brown. Other siblings included Forrest Jr. (Bud) and Eleanor. A proud Navy family, they settled in San Diego in 1938, where Chris remained for the duration of her life.

She attended Hoover High School, except for her junior year, which she spent at Punahou School in Oahu while her father was deployed in Hawaii. She returned to graduate with her class in 1949, attended San Diego State College, and was an active member of Alpha Chi Omega. She met her husband, Richard (Dick) Maches, at State, and they married on August 24, 1952.

Chris and Dick settled in the San Carlos area of San Diego to raise their four children, and remained there after the kids were grown. Chris was involved in many organizations, including Republican Women’s Federated and parent groups at various schools. Throughout her life Chris was a voracious reader, often having more than one book going at a time. She loved all things dachshund.

They both found a church home at St Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in 1992; she loved the people there, and her faith blossomed. She was involved in Prayers & Squares and Daughters of the King, and was a regular at many church events and concerts. Over the years Chris taught adult education courses on C.S. Lewis, as well as on topics such as Our Anglican Heritage.

Chris is survived by her husband of 65 years, Dick, and their 4 children Stephen (Patti), Bruce, Elizabeth (Steven), and Scott (Kathleen); grandchildren Jeffrey, Stephen (Bethany), James, Natalie, Jennifer, Tori, Zack, Ryan, and Charlie; great-grandchildren Kaelib and Ethan; her sister Eleanor; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at 10 a.m. at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church in San Diego. A reception will immediately follow the service in the Parish House. St. Dunstan's is located at 6556 Park Ridge Blvd, San Diego, CA 92120.
