Obituary for Daryl Winthrop Barnes

Daryl was born in Elmira, New York on December 11, 1940 to E. Richard (78th District California Assemblyman) and Marvel Barnes (elementary school teacher), the youngest of 4 children (Gwen Baker, deceased; Dick Barnes (Ruth); Joanne Lees) His father was a chaplain in the Navy living in a variety of places before ending up in San Diego in 1952 at 11 years old. They lived in Point Loma and he loved the ocean. Ultimately becoming a surfer and lifeguard for many years. He graduated from Point Loma High School in 1958 and attended Cal Western University, receiving his Bachelors and Master's in Education. He became an elementary school teacher with the San Diego Unified School District teaching 5th and 6th grade his entire career of 38 years. In 1979 Daryl was teaching at Cleveland Elementary and was heavily involved in the Brenda Spencer shooting, which killed 2 and wounded 9. He married Mary in 1963. From that marriage, 4 children were born (Dan Barnes (Val), Scott Barnes (Tracy), Kelly Greene (Jon) and John Barnes (Lori)). In 1997 he married his current wife Karen and inherited three grown children (Lisa DeRosier (Chris), Denise Alva (Ray) and Rob Hartman (Laura)). With this family, he had 19 combined grandchildren (pre-deceased by Luke Barnes) and 2 great grandchildren. In 2001 he retired and moved to Montana, where they spent 5 years living in the woods surrounded by wildlife. He loved the life of a hunter and fisherman. Due to health issues, they moved to Idaho in 2007 where they lived for 8 years. In 2015 they returned to San Diego to be closer to family and friends. Daryl loved the Lord, his family and his country.
