David Wallace Wright

David Wright (96) passed away in La Mesa, CA on January 21, 2021. Dave was born in Manteno, IL on November 21, 1924 to Robert and Jesse Wright. He joined the Navy in 1943 and went to Quartermaster School at Tufts College. Dave was very proud of his contribution to the Naval Choir. Dave received an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1947. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1949. Dave married Dorothy Terrell Hopper on July 1, 1949 and they were happily married until her death on December 25, 2007.
Dave worked as an engineer (receiving a patent in 1981), a public school teacher, and a church office administrator, as well as owning a family-run restaurant in Redondo Beach. In each of these endeavors, he spread the love of Jesus and had a positive impact on his surroundings. Dave loved to sing, “tinker” on the piano, play harmonica, read, play chess, and help others. He was an avid sailor, and he loved being out on the water. David was a proud member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, singing in the choir, serving on Session, and participating in numerous fellowship groups. David also contributed to several charity
organizations.
David is survived by his children: Richard Wright, Marjorie Wright Wallace, and Mark Wright as well as their spouses, 15 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. David was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Robert Wright and Edward James Wright, and his beloved wife of 58 years, Dorothy Wright.
Dave will be remembered as a godly, generous, and loving family man.
A graveside memorial service will be held at Green Hills Memorial Park (27501 South Western Avenue Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275) on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at 11:30 AM. (Masks will be worn and social distancing encouraged. Please contact us if you would like to attend the service.)
