Donald Ray Seggie
August 29, 1937 - November 8, 2021
Donald Ray “Don” was born in Cassville, West Virginia as the middle child of seven siblings and grew up in Morgantown (Go Mountaineers!!) Right after High School he joined the Air Force to see the world. His first assignment was out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, Lajes Air Force Base on Terceira Island, Azores Portugal. He met the stunningly beautiful Maria Alda, and fell head over heels. They married and welcomed two children before returning to the United States.
Don served in the Air Force for over 20 years. When not in a missile silo, he was very active as a baseball coach and umpire for youth sports throughout the years. He attended all that he could of his children’s extracurricular activities. He loved College and Professional Football, Professional Baseball and Golf …. never missing a chance to attend an event.
After retiring from the Air Force, Don had a long career as a Quality Control Inspector Supervisor with General Dynamics, Convair Division in San Diego. He worked on several programs including the Space Shuttle.
Don passed away at home, surrounded by his love ones on November 8, 2021.
Don is survived by his lovely wife Maria Alda, his two children Edna Maria(Patrick) and James Donald all of San Diego, CA. He is also survived by his loving sister Ilene Allen of Petersburg, West Virginia and countless numbers of nieces, nephews and other family members. In addition, although honorary, there are many that called him Grandpa. How he loved to be called Grandpa!
Don was preceded in death by his parents James Edwin and Edna Pearl Seggie, and five of his six siblings Bill, Doris, Dick, Ronnie and Sharon Lynn. They are all now up in heaven playing cards for pennies and Edna Pearl is taking their money and winning every hand!
The family extends deep gratitude to the many civilian and VA doctors, nurses and staff that cared for Don over the many years. And, for the final chapter of his life, to the Comfort and Peace Hospice for providing loving care.
In lieu of flowers, if you would like to make a donation to your favorite charity, Alzheimer’s Research or Parkinson’s Research in honor of Don, that would be much appreciated. He is looking down on us with that “Seggie” glint in his blue eyes and a big smile.
A private service and burial will be held at Miramar National Cemetery.
