Our family, friends and community sadly lost a cherished family member on Wednesday
January 12, 2022 when Douglas Edward Samuolis favorably known as Doug, passed away from
natural causes. Doug was born June 5, 1951 in Woodbury, Connecticut. He moved to San Diego,
California in 1971 where he served in the U.S. Navy as a Corpsman until being honorably
discharged four years later. After this, he settled into the San Diego area and worked at The San
Diego Naval Hospital for several years.
Doug was well liked and appreciated by all who knew him closely as well as neighbors he
crossed paths with. His genuine caring personality led him to be the caregiver to a close
disabled friend for many years. Doug was a part of and supported the LGBTQ community as well
as volunteered at a near and dear non-profit organization known as Mama’s Kitchen in San
Diego, California. Doug had a fond love for his dogs and cats he had over the years, movies and
cooking a spectacular homemade spaghetti with meatballs dish.
He is survived by his closest sister Sandy Rozsa whom resides in San Diego County and 8
additional siblings; Stanley Samuolis, Vincent Samuolis, Matthew Samuolis, Catherine Samuolis
Dalton, Patricia Howard, Mary Chromik, Theresa Minder as well as several Nephews, Nieces and
many close friends. Doug was predeceased by his brothers Tony Samuolis, Greg Samuolis and
Johnny Samuolis.
Doug will be entombed at the Miramar Naval National Cemetery in San Diego, California. In lieu
of flowers, the family is asking that those who wish to contribute to his memory do so by
donating to Doug’s most beloved food distribution center, Mama’s Kitchen of San Diego at
