Elizabeth Doris (Bean) Braun
Elizabeth Doris (Bean) Braun was in the hardware business for two decades, but “Betje” always
made space for her love of cross-stitching.
When she and her husband, Philip, opened Braun Hardware in the Allied Gardens area of San
Diego, Betje created a Stitch-a-Cross section in the back of the business. They were known for
offering special services such as mending screens and even building them to order.
After the store closed and after Philip died in 2006, she continued her stitching business until
2012, Even in her 80s, she stitched her own beautiful pictures.
Mrs. Braun, 93, died in her sleep Dec. 1 in an Escondido extended-care facility. Her friends at
the facility referred to her as “Queen Elizabeth,” and she liked to claim she was actually 100.
She was born in Los Angeles on Oct. 27, 1927, to John Morton Bean and Fern Toomey and
graduated from La Jolla High School in 1945.
She loved being a California girl, but marriage in 1946 to a World War II Veteran, Willis F.
Keiser, took her east and north to Michigan, where they raised five children.
When that marriage ended after 25 years, she headed back to San Diego’s sunny climate, which
she had missed so much. She and Philip, another World War II veteran, married in 1974).
Any time her children called to check on her, Betje always asked about the weather where they
were. No matter the answer, it was always nicer in San Diego. “It’s always perfect here,” she’d
say, most likely with a smile on her tanned face.
Her children realize Heaven better be as beautiful as San Diego, or there will be at least one
person complaining!
In her later years, she enjoyed watching old movies on television, reading and cross-stitching.
She is survived by four children: Katherine (Donald) Dahlstrom, Virginia (Gregory) Borowski, Janet Lowry (Ernest Marbury), John Keiser (Cherrie Claflin). Her step-children are Philip (Joyce) Braun Jr., Howard Braun, Alan Braun, Juli (Harry) Cole, Sara (Ralph) Britt and Jennifer (Steve) Willis. Most live in California, Florida and Michigan. She had nearly 40 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, son Charles Keiser and grandson Craig
Parrish.
Cremation has taken place. She will be interred at Fort Rosencrans National Cemetery in Point
Loma with her husband.
