Sister Ellen Marie Ryan, CSJ
Ellen Marie Ryan, a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet, was born to Georgia Marie Ball and William John Ryan in San Diego on July 11, 1932. She passed peacefully on December 19, 2020, at Scripps Mercy Hospital. Sister ministered as teacher and principal in elementary and high schools in San Diego, Los Angeles, Lakewood, Manhattan Beach, Canoga Park, Oxnard, Palo Alto, and San Francisco. In San Diego, she was a teacher and tutor at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace the same school she had attended from first grade through high school graduating in the Class of 1950. She also was a grant writer for St. Vincent de Paul Villages. Sister earned her BA and MA degrees from Mount St. Mary’s University in Los Angeles. The memory of her talent as teacher and principal, her rapport with students, her kindness and sense of humor endures. Her friendships were many and lasting including with many of the students she taught. May she now enjoy the reward of eternal peace.
