January 4, 1933 – February 28, 2020
Florence “Flo” Nina Leonard Solberg, 87, of San Diego, CA, formerly of Rochelle, Naperville and Woodridge, IL and Cherokee Village, AR, passed away on February 28, 2020 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
Flo was born in Rochelle, IL and lived there for her first 9 years. When her father started working in the canning business, the family lived in several small towns in Wisconsin before settling in Appleton, WI where Flo graduated from high school in 1950. She attended Beloit College in Beloit, WI, for two years where she met and married Lawrence “Larry” Solberg in 1953. She then decided to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a nurse. She graduated from the Chicago Wesley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, IL, in 1955. After graduation, Flo was a registered nurse in hospitals and nursing homes in and near Naperville, IL where Larry taught social studies. They raised their 4 children in Naperville and Woodridge, IL.
In the mid-1980s, Larry retired from teaching and they moved first to Lake Summerset in Davis, IL, and then to Cherokee Village, AR. Flo continued working in nursing homes during this time. When Larry passed away in 2000, Flo relocated to San Diego to live near family there.
Throughout her life Flo enjoyed painting, drawing, gardening, baking, attending church and family events, and going for long walks. She and Larry also enjoyed traveling and camping while they were raising their family, and they saw much of the U.S. during summer vacations.
Flo is survived by two children, Lynne Perry (Roy) of San Diego and Stephan Solberg (Victoria) of Spring Lake, Michigan; her brother John Leonard (Sue); her cousin Meg Brook (Gil); eight grandchildren, Andrea Murphy (Chad), Eric Neri (Kristina), Sean Perry (Alissa), Daniel Solberg, Sara Solberg, Britney Pieta, Jamie Pieta D’Onofrio (Vincent), and Kristin Pieta; four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Flo in death were her parents, Frank E. Leonard and Valborg Wold Leonard Gochnauer, her brother Frank W. Leonard, her husband Lawrence, and her daughters Julie Solberg and Valerie Solberg Pieta (James).
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association or another charity of your choice.
