Floyd Dean Harris, 67 passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his family on Thursday, June 26, 2014. He was born on Jan. 18, 1947 in Peoria, IL to parents Floyd and Vera Harris. He graduated from Limestone High School, class of 1965 in Bartonville, IL. He served in the US Air Force as a Radar Tech. from Nov. 10, 1966 to Nov. 09, 1970. His was last stationed at Luke AFB, Glendale, AZ. He was married Nov. 1, 1969 in Campo, CA to Georgene Okey. He returned to his
childhood home, Bartonville, IL with his new wife and first child in 1970, where he worked at International Harvester as an apprentice mechanic. In 1976, he moved with his wife and children to Lake Morena, CA where he worked for 27 years,
first as a diesel and school bus mechanic and later as the Director of ransportation for the Mountain Empire Unified School District (MEUSD). While working at the MEUSD he also worked alongside his wife for over 15 years as the owner of
Oak Shores Malt Shop and Grocery in Lake Morena, CA. There they served the local community and fishing enthusiasts with grocery items and fresh food from an old-fashioned 1950's soda fountain for the best cheese burgers and milk shakes on the mountain. In 1987, Floyd and Georgene sold the Malt Shop and he only had one job at the school district until he retired in 2001.
After retirement he pursued other interests and drove a heavy equipment crane boom truck in Las Vegas and then went back into business with his wife as the owner of the Santa Ysabel Fuel Stop and Grocery and as a substitute bus
driver for MEUSD. He finally retired completely in 2012. He spent many years as a Lake Morena Volunteer Fireman, Little League coach and on the Oak Shores Water District as a board member.
Floyd enjoyed spending time with his family, boating, water-skiing, building his dream home in the AZ desert at the Colorado River and traveling. After retirement he traveled many times to his home at the Colorado River, Lake Havasu,
Kansas City, Utah, Louisiana, Texas and dozens of other destinations. One of his favorite trips was to Washington DC and Ground Zero in NYC. He loved water sports, boating, history, astronomy, Lake Powell, all things mechanical and was great amateur weatherman. He loved his family and friends and always made it a point to visit them as often as possible no matter where they lived.
Floyd is survived by his wife, Georgene; daughters Kristi Kor (Gerald) Many, Louisiana; Tina Harris of Shawnee, KS and son, Gene Harris (Bonnie) Lakeside, CA; grandchildren: Clayton Heuslein, Hanna Kor, Chloe Harris, Caleb Harris, Dutch Kor and Morgan Heuslein. He has two sisters Vickie Sue Pipkins (Don) Bartonville, IL and Sharon Diamond (Kenny) Austin, TX. 5 Nieces, 5 great nieces, 1 great nephew and numerous cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2014 @ 11:00AM at Lake Morena Community Church. 29765 Oak Drive,
Campo, CA 91906.
A private interment service for the family will be held at Miramar National Cemetery on Friday, July 4th @ 11:00AM.
