Obituary for Frances Evelyn Maynard

Frances passed away in comfort in the early morning of December 4, 2014 under the care of hospice. She had suffered from breast cancer since 2011, along with dementia.

Frances was born in San Diego, California on August 2, 1919 where she lived for 90 years. She loved San Diego. She loved to read, watch the news and read the newspaper every day.

While working at Bank of America in San Diego, she met and later married George L. Vogler, Jr. Together they had two children: Susan and George Michael. George was a B52 pilot. During a WW II mission from his base in England in 1944, his airplane was shot down over Germany. He and his crew were captured and became prisoners of war until the war ended. He came back to the US and lived a few more years, but ultimately his body succumbed to his war injuries and cancer took his life in 1951.
For a few years Frances took care of her two young children alone. Then mutual friends arranged a blind date with someone who had also just lost his spouse, Ken Maynard. Ken had two children, Diane and Ken Jr. Frances and Ken dated for about a year and married in 1953. She and Ken grew lots of fruits and vegetables and shared them with everyone for years. She and Ken were active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

About three years after their marriage their son David was born. Frances would talk of having another child since there was a ten year age gap between David and his youngest siblings. In Frances' words, "I had 4 teenagers in the house, and a baby. They would wake up David when he was sleeping and play with him for a couple minutes and then when he started to cry, they would pass him off to me, while I was cooking dinner!!.... need I say more?"
Her second husband, Ken, passed away in 2004 after 51 years of marriage to Frances. Then in the spring 2010, with her health slipping, she elected to relocate to Oklahoma to be near David and his family where she lived until her passing.

She is survived by: Rosie, her Maine Coon Cat now of Peoria, IL (with Matthew and Danielle Brown, great grandson and wife); her younger brother Fred Clarke of Sun City, CA and his wife Nancy; her children; Diane (Maynard) Fuller of El Cajon, CA; Susie (Vogler) Braithwaite of Lafayette, LA; George M. Vogler & wife Pat of Englewood, CO; Ken Maynard, Jr. and wife Patty of Elko, NV; and David Maynard and wife Arlene of Yukon, OK. Frances' posterity includes 18 grandchildren; 58 great grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., January 19, 2015, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 8472 Blossom Lane, Lemon Grove, CA 91945-4229, with interment at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, CA.
