Gary D. Vandervort passed away on July 22nd, 2018. He was born in Cobleskill, NY on June 14th, 1943 and moved to San Diego in 1954. Gary attended Dana Jr. High and graduated from Point Loma High School in 1961. He joined the Army National Guard and was stationed at Fort Knox in KY and Fort Ord in CA.
After serving in the military, Gary became a Deputy Marshall for San Diego County. He faithfully served his community for 25 years until his retirement in 1999. In 1994, Gary received a Medal of Valor for bravery after risking his own life to restrain a prisoner who seized a loaded firearm during a court session. Gary prevented multiple casualties to civilians, and other deputies while sacrificing his own safety.
Gary is survived by his four children Todd Vandervort, Scott Vandervort, Dustin White, and Stacey Howe and five grandchildren.
San Diego lost one of the good guys this week. Rest in peace, Dad. We love you.
Funeral services will be held on August 2nd at 10:00 AM at Singing Hills Memorial Park. Reception to follow.
