George Robert “Bob” Roxburgh passed peacefully December 15. The second generation native San Diegan was born November 6, 1926 at McCulloch Hospital and grew up as a member of the Golden Hill Gang. He attended Sherman School, Roosevelt Jr. High and San Diego High graduating in 1942. Bob was a star pitcher for Mike Morrow’s 1941 World Champion Post 6 American Legion Baseball Team who were honored guests at the World Series in NYC the same year. He signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers playing two seasons before an injury ended his baseball career. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy during WWII and subsequently returned to his hometown joining the San Diego Fire Department in July of 1948 where he rose to Captain before his retirement in 1978. He was instrumental in many activities of the San Diego Fireman’s Relief Association, serving on its Board of Advisers for many years. Bob and his wife Theresa moved first to Oregon and then to Santa Maria where Bob was able to pursue his life-long love of horses. He took up team roping (as a heeler, no less) in his 50s winning several senior completions. Bob and Theresa returned to San Diego prior to Theresa’s passing in 2010. Bob is survived by his two daughters, Claudia Roxburgh of Newport Beach and Sr. Valerie Marie Roxburgh, SND of Long Beach along with his stepson Mark Bailey (No’ne) of Spring Valley. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to the charity of your choice or to The Sisters of Notre Dame, 1776 Hendrix Ave., Thousand Oaks, CA 91360. No services are planned
