Guy Lambert Mayer passed away peacefully at age 57 on September 15, 2024 at his brother's home in San Diego after several months of treatment for metastatic colon cancer. Our lives are forever changed as our beloved baby brother is now reunited in heaven with our recently departed mother, our father and all who have passed before.
Guy was born in St. Louis on May 22, 1967, as the youngest of three children of Alfred Mayer, a builder/developer, and Sylvia Mayer (nee Wood), a homemaker and former advertising salesperson.
When Guy was four, his family moved to Houston where Guy would live for most of his 57 years. Guy was a lifelong fan of Houston sports teams and always a proud enthusiast of the growth, development and architecture for which Houston is still known today... especially the downtown skyline.
Guy attended several schools from kindergarten through 10th grade, including a military boarding school, San Marcos Baptist Academy (TX). Guy then went to the CEDU School (Running Springs, CA), and graduated from Rocky Mountain Academy (Bonners Ferry, ID).
By this time our father had sold his homebuilding business and moved to San Diego, so Guy chose to attend nearby Chapman University (Orange, CA) where he studied Communications. Guy also wrote articles for the Chapman Panther student newspaper and created/hosted his own show on Radio Chapman.
In 1989, Guy moved back to Houston where our mother still lived. Guy helped Mom with companionship and caring for her parents in their declining years, and he remained in Houston to help Mom again many years later as her own health began to decline. Mom passed away at age 89 last July (2023), just a few months before the symptoms and diagnosis of Guy's cancer were revealed. Guy's family is so blessed and thankful that this was God's timing.
Upon returning to Houston, Guy continued his studies at Stephen F. Austin State University (Nacogdoches, TX) and also earned several computer hardware and software certificates. Guy was very proud of the various graphic and web design projects that he completed at Lone Star College.
Guy's work life included many years of being an online marketer on eBay (under his business name Electro Media Mart), selling books, movies, music, small electronic devices, etc. His specialty was using his creative writing skills to set his offering apart from his competitors selling the same product. Guy also had stints in office and retail work and was a delivery driver for Pizza Hut for several years until early-2024 when his illness forced him to stop working and move to his brother's home in San Diego.
Guy's hobbies included collecting many (over 200) digital movies, including several classics from Hollywood's Golden Age. His knowledge of cinematic history, its impact on the development of Los Angeles and many other subjects was very impressive. Guy enjoyed keeping in touch with friends via social media, reading (often non-fiction historical content) and competing in tennis, basketball and other sports.
Most importantly Guy was a sweet, generous soul who knew Jesus and where he was going after this life.
Guy is predeceased by his mother Sylvia Mayer, father Alfred Mayer, both sets of grandparents (Jim and Eleanor Wood, Herman and Mona Mayer) and nephew Mark Pagel.
Guy is survived by his sister Laura Mayer and brother Jim Mayer (both of San Diego), sisters Jan Pagel (Oshkosh, WI) and Julie Leighton (St. Louis), sister-in-law Deanna Mayer and niece Alyson Mayer (with whom Guy lived in San Diego), niece Whitney Villmer (St. Louis), nephew Arin Pagel (Oshkosh, WI), great nephew Caleb (Arin's son) and many others including Uncle Jerry/Aunt Emily/cousins Margie, Steven and Michael and multi-generational members of the Mayer, Brown and Raisher families throughout California and beyond.
A Celebration of Guy's Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2024 in the chapel at Featheringill Mortuary, 6322 El Cajon Blvd, San Diego, CA 92115. Please plan to join the the family for lunch after the service in the adjacent reception room.
We would like to sincerely thank all of the wonderful care providers who came into Guy's life in the past several months: Hospice of the North Coast, UCSD Moores Cancer Center, Texas Oncology-The Woodlands and his Houston care angels Inishka and Annette.
In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation in Guy's memory to any of the providers listed above or American Cancer Society.
