Harold "Hal" Smart, 87, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 6, 2016 under Silverado Hospicecare.
A proud San Diego native, Hal was born January 30, 1929 in San Diego to Salvation Army Officers Harold and Edith Smart. He served his country proudly in the Korean War as a corporal in the U.S. Army, where Hal taught water purification and other courses while on active duty. He also started a local water company to put himself through school earning a degree in Economics at San Diego State College. After graduation, Hal worked in banking, followed by a 20-year career as a county social worker. He then “retired” and sold residential real estate for a number of years.
Raised in the Salvation Army, Hal learned to play the trumpet and sing early in life. He was very active in
local churches, including Del Cerro Baptist, Evangelical Bible Church, and College Avenue Baptist Church (CABC). Hal loved singing in the choir and serving as a church treasurer. He met his first wife at a local church where she played the organ. Hal and his first wife, Marilyn, had two children, and Hal loved to go on drives around the county telling stories about the early years in San Diego, as well as taking his family on driving trips across the U.S. After his first wife’s death, Hal was active in the CABC grief recovery group where he met Jane Wise, to whom he was married for over 18 years. Hal Smart was a wonderful Christian servant and will be forever in our hearts. His loving compassion and generosity for family and friends will be forever missed.
Hal Smart was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Marilyn, and brother Edward. He is survived by his second wife, Jane; daughter, Kathryn; daughter, Ellen and son-in- law, Keith Brown; grandsons, Brandon and Michael, and granddaughter, Jealyn.
Hal enjoyed supporting many Christian ministries. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be
made to: Bethel Seminary, 6116 Arosa St., San Diego, CA 92115, referencing the M.Smart Fund.
Private services will be held, with interment at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery.
