James Fallon
James Fallon passed away on Tuesday, March 17, after a bout with pneumonia /complications from lung cancer. Jim was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of the late Thomas and Winifred Fallon. A graduate of St. Augustine High School in Brooklyn, Jim served his country during W.W. II in the Army Air Corps, as a weather observer and radio operator. Jim was a long-time member of Edward M. McKee American Legion Post #131 in Whitestone, New York.
After the war, Jim joined the New York City Police Department, walking a beat in Bedford/Stuyvesant as a rookie. For many years, Jim ran the mobile communications unit for the N.Y.P.D., retiring as a sergeant from the Organized Crime Control Bureau.
Leaving the brownstones of Brooklyn behind, Jim and his bride moved to the far-off land of Whitestone, Queens. Active members of St. Mel’s Church, the couple stayed busy raising four children, between softball games, orthodontist appointments, blue and gold dinners, and Brownie meetings.
In 1974, Jim moved his family to San Diego to begin the West Coast chapter of his life. He bought his first pair of Birkenstocks and learned how to grow alfalfa sprouts. Jim even opened a health food store in Tierrasanta called Mission Nutrition, where he shared his knowledge for healthy living. For many years, he was the Scouting Coordinator for the Diocese of San Diego, working tirelessly to bring the religious awards program to Boy Scout troops and Cub Scout packs across the county.
Soldier, police officer, Scouter- he looked good in a uniform!
At St. Therese parish, Jim was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, a third degree knight, and a distinguished doughnut distributor for many years in the church hall. Most importantly, Jim energetically supported the Right To Life campaign in the parish and in the greater community.
In later years, Jim took many classes at the San Diego Center for the Blind and at the Braille Institute. He took advantage of every gadget and gizmo available to compensate for his failing eyesight. Jim kept up to date on his computer; his favorite program even had the computer speak back to him.
Jim was a man of many talents: bartender, gardener, builder of play houses, cook, life-long learner, combiner of fruit juices, late-night bread maker, cherry tree conqueror, and accomplished square dancer. He was a loving husband, a great dad, and an awesome grandpa. Jim was most of all a teacher; he taught us all to love God and to cherish each other and to keep an eye on the big picture. He was a man of absolute faith in the Lord.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of sixty years Alice, his daughter Kathy (Bob) LaRose, daughter Barbara Fallon, son Jim (Phebe) Fallon, and daughter Patricia (Jomar) Cruz. He will be missed by his grandchildren Jennifer and Carolyn LaRose, Maggie, Charlie, and Andrew Fallon, and Therese, Joshua, and Christopher Cruz.
To celebrate his life, there will a rosary this Friday, March 27, at 10:30 A.M., followed immediately by a mass of Christian burial, at St. Therese Church, 6016 Camino Rico, San Diego.
