Janet Kohen devoted her life to empowering women and encouraging them to determine their own destiny. She was an early member of the Women's Studies department at San Diego State University serving from 1980 to 2001. She raised two daughters as a single parent after the sudden death of her husband. She moved to San Diego in 1980 and adopted California as her home. In her spare time she read voraciously, worked on her xeriscape garden, and traveled the world. She is survived by her daughters Elizabeth Knowlton and Jessica Kohen, and her four siblings.
Those who know Janet won't be surprised that she did not want a memorial service. To honor her life's work, we are asking that instead of sending flowers you make a donation to your local planned parenthood in her name.
