Jeannine Cartier Mitchell, a longtime resident of San Diego, died Monday, February 24, 2020. Born in 1936 in Kankakee, Illinois, Jeannine moved to San Diego with her mother in 1951 after her father passed away. She attended Hoover High School and then went on to attend San Diego State University where she became a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. While there, she met the love of her life, Robert Mitchell and the two quickly married in 1957 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
They settled in the college area and soon Bob was drafted into the U.S. Army. They were sent to Augusta, Georgia and then Washington, DC where Bob worked in the Pentagon. While there, their first daughter, Linda, was born in Alexandria, Virginia. Once out of the army, Bob and Jeannine returned to their beloved San Diego. Bob re-enrolled at San Diego State working on a degree in Accounting and Jeannine began her lifelong career working at SDSU. She met some of her closest friends there and they remained lifelong girlfriends until her passing.
Just before Bob graduated, they had their second child, Alison. Within that year, they bought their one and only home in the El Cerrito neighborhood near SDSU. Jeannine stayed home with the girls while Bob worked for the City of San Diego as a Systems Analyst. Jeannine enrolled the girls at Blessed Sacrament School and immersed herself in school and church volunteer activities often chairing fundraising events. She again made lifelong friendships with parents and friends there who continued to visit her until her last days. In 1975, Jeannine went back to work for San Diego State University where she ultimately retired in 1987.
Jeannine loved to travel and she and Bob made numerous trips to Europe with good friends. When they weren’t traveling to Europe, they would spend several weeks in Kauai. She loved cooking and having friends over to see pictures from their latest travels. They also loved going to the movies and would travel every year up to Westwood in Los Angeles the day after Christmas for a movie marathon with good friends, they did this for 40 years.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Mitchell; her mother, Beulah Cartier Williams; her father, Armand Cartier; and her brother, Warner Cartier. She is survived by her daughters Linda (Dave) Hernandez and Alison (Doug) Scott and five grandchildren Haley and Mitchell Hernandez and Taylor, Connor and Kyle Scott. Jeannine loved her family-- her cousins, nieces and nephews and her grandnieces and grandnephews were all a part of her life.
Jeannine loved her life, her family and all of her many friends. When you met her, you immediately felt like you knew her. She welcomed everyone and many times brought home people for Thanksgiving Dinner who did not have anywhere to go. She was fun and generous and loved a good party!
A date for a Celebration of Life has not been determined yet but we will post it here once we have it scheduled.
