Jerome (Jerry) L. Martin, Captain, USN, Retired, died in San Diego on August 27, surrounded by family. He will be forever remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, mentor, and friend.
Jerry was born in Clearfield, PA to Edward & Marian (Neurohr) Martin. After making Eagle Scout and serving as high school Class President, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1963. He went through Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I. and was commissioned an Ensign in February 1964.
While stationed at Pearl Harbor, Jerry met and married Chris (Green) in 1966, and started a family.
Jerry served as a Surface Warfare Officer on many ships including USS McMorris, USS Horne, USS Bronstein, and USS Cook. Jerry’s sea duty culminated as the Commanding Officer for USS Bradley from 1980-82. He earned an M.S. in Economics and an M.A. in International Relations, and was a graduate of the Naval War College.
Jerry also served as the Chief of Staff to the Commander Middle East Force in the Persian Gulf from March 1987-88. He finished his Naval career as the Director Tactical Training, Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center Pacific in 1991.
In retirement, Jerry was a Financial Advisor, served as a trustee for 23 years to the Benedictine Sisters of Sacred Heart Monastery in Lisle (IL), and taught as an Adjunct Professor at the Naval War College at Great Lakes. Upon his return to San Diego, Jerry logged more than 1700 hours volunteering as a docent for the USS Midway.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Christine, children Kevin (Ann), Steve (Stacey), Michelle (Bob), Valerie, and 7 beautiful grandchildren.
The visitation is Sept. 11 from 4:00-8:00pm at Featheringill Mortuary in El Cajon. Memorial services will be at 10:30am on Sept. 12 at Our Lady of Grace in El Cajon, with internment at 1:00 pm at Miramar National Cemetery with full military honors.
