John Robert Chesire passed away peacefully at Sharp Memorial Hospital surrounded by his wife and children in San Diego, CA on Thursday December 16th, 2021. John is survived by his wife Catherine Chesire, daughter Suzie and son Ryan, Ryan’s wife Adelaida, grandchildren Matthew and Joshua, John’s sister Mary Kay Kuhfittig and her husband Peter, and their children, his niece Anne Marie and nephew Paul. John is preceded in death by his parents Milton and Helen Chesire.
John was born on September 20, 1946 in Anamosa, Iowa where he grew up on the family farm. As a child, he was a lover of animals and an active member of 4H. He attended St. Michael’s Elementary School, Anamosa High School and graduated from Creighton University in 1968 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy and attended Naval Flight School in Pensacola, FL.
John served for 22 years in the Navy as a fighter pilot flying F-4’s and F-14’s. He flew 197 missions during the Vietnam War, was a graduate of Navy Fighter Weapons School “Top Gun”, and retired as a Commander. He then went on to fly as a Captain for America West Airlines for over 20 years. John had a true love for aviation. In his retirement, he found a passion for answering aviation related questions on the website Quora and was recognized as one their top writers for many years.
John had a quick wit and loved a good practical joke. He loved his family dearly. His grandchildren brought much love and joy into his life. One of his favorite pastimes was watching them play soccer and baseball. John will be forever loved and greatly missed by all. He touched many lives.
