Obituary for John "Jack" Faulds Jr.

John "Jack" Faulds Jr. died peacefully at home with all his children by his side.  His wife of 62 years and best
friend, Shirley, passed in February 2013, also peacefully at home.  Both are interred together at the Fort
Rosecrans National Cemetery on Point Loma.  Born in Sunnyvale, CA on December 5, 1925, to Grace an John Faulds, Sr,. he was the middle child between his two sisters, Jean and Virginia, and raised with his maternal grand-parents. He learned the simple values respect for family and community, simplicity of life, and of personal integrity.  And his "live life with gusto" attitude was infectious.  Jack graduated from Palo Alto High School at 17 and promptly joined the Army Air Corps proudly serving as an Aviation
Cadet during WWII.  This is where his love of flying began to be realized.  At the conclusion of the war, he attended and graduated with a degree in Business Administration from San Jose State University where he met a cute co-ed and Journalism major, Shirley.  They married December 1949 in San Diego.  Jack started his career in grocery retail with father-in- law and mentor, Don Hankins, who owned and operated 6-7 "Don's Market" locations throughout San Diego.
Dad bought his first store, Big E Market, in Escondido when Jan and Dan were pre-schoolers and with Connie
on the way.  Working more than full-time retail hours, we still remember family weekends waterskiing and all
things water-related. And, as if being self-employed while raising three children isn't enough, dad would
accept acting roles in the community theater guild, weld and work on our boat and other items for our Colorado River hacienda, be an active member in the city's Chamber of Commerce, in Merchant's Associations, IndianGuides with Dan, supporting Little League, piano and music lessons.  He retired at 62 years old and for the next 25 years, Jack and Shirley, inseparable, traveled everywhere, by plane, train, automobile and ship.  Nothing better for dad was to pilot his 4 seater Cessna "Charlie" with mom. They achieved many goals, one of having Charlie "sleep" (ie overnight) in every state of the Union. Sadly, but
responsibly in his opinion, he voluntarily hung up his wings at age 82 as a flying "octogenarian" with AOPA.
Every room of the house and through every corner of the property had items he created, structures he built, or
landscape he designed. For 20 years, he actively participated with the La Mesa Railroad Club, modeling to-
scale railway at the San Diego Railroad Museum in Balboa Park.  He functioned as an electrician and a train
operator, amongst participating other projects and building and acquiring engines and train cars for use at
home and at the museum.
All along life, he was so present for his children, nieces and nephews even from afar in the Bay Area.  Many of
Jan, Dan, and Connie's family and friends were also "adopted" by Jack and Shirley and maintained
relationships even after all three moved away to LA/central California, Texas and Ohio.
Jack is survived by his sister, Jean, his children Janice, Daniel and Constance, son-in- law Ralph,
grandchildren Austin, Derek, Kristen and Julia, and greatly-loved nieces and nephews.  Jack was pre-deceased
by granddaughter, Amy, 26.
