John Everett Kays passed on October 26, 2024. He was born on Friday, July 13, 1934 prompting his mother to nickname him "Lucky". John was known for his sharp mind, quick wit and great sense of humor. He never met a stranger and would strike up a conversation where ever he went. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, he moved to Northern California at an early age, though he never lost his love for Texas. He graduated from Analy High School in Sebastopol, California. He had many fond memories of his time growing up on the Russian River and the lifelong friends he made there.
He found his calling when he joined the Air Force in May of 1953. He served more than 28 years including 11 years during the Vietnam War. He received numerous commendations and awards including The Distinguished Flying Cross Medal, the Pentagon's third highest, in April of 1970. As a flight engineer on the C-130, he was in his element. He loved that plane and often referred to it as his "Baby". He flew a mission called "Blind Bat" with others in the C-130 community. It was a dangerous mission where John's experiences and those of others involved forged deep bonds and lifelong friendships. John traveled to more than 50 countries during his lifetime. With his incredible memory, he could tell you stories in detail about every place he ever visited, his favorite being the Seychelles.
John was a loving husband, father and friend.
