John Edward Nealis, a cherished soul whose gentle spirit and tireless dedication left an indelible mark on the lives of many, passed away on September 30, 2024 in Lemon Grove, California. Born on February 22, 1977, in the vibrant city of San Diego, he lived his life with an unyielding to those around him and a thirst for knowledge that spanned myriad pursuits.

John was a multifaceted individual; his diverse career journey took him from being a highly respected security guard and events coordinator to honing his skills as a mechanic and carpenter. He approached each facet of his profession with the same meticulous attention to detail that he applied to everything in life. His work ethic and interpersonal skills earned him the admiration of both colleagues and friends, embodying the ideal of a true professional.

An extraordinary soldier, John courageously enlisted in the United States Army in the aftermath of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. His valor and commitment to serving his country took him to the front lines in both Afghanistan and Iraq, where he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. John's proudest accomplishment was undoubtedly his military service, as he fought diligently for the freedoms that are the bedrock of our nation.

Beyond his professional achievements, John was a free-spirited man of mystery, a theologian and philosopher whose insights resonated deeply with those fortunate enough to know him. His voracious appetite for reading and enthusiastic pursuit of learning were evident in his choice of studies, focusing on Early Childhood Development and Special Education. He was not just a man of knowledge but also of compassion, reflected in the tenderness with which he engaged those in his life.

In his leisure time, John found joy in an eclectic array of hobbies. He was an avid student of martial arts and scuba diving, and he embraced the serenity of leisurely kite flying and travel. His culinary skills brought warmth to gatherings with family and friends, where laughter and storytelling flowed as freely as the shared meals.

John's gentleness and kindness are fondly remembered by those who had the privilege to be part of his life. One particular memory, cherished by a loved one, speaks to his nurturing nature: he once gifted a lucky rabbit's foot as a talisman of protection, a symbol of his desire to keep others safe.

Tragically, John's vibrant journey was cut short when he was fatally injured in a motorcycle accident. While navigating the roads he loved, he was struck from behind by a vehicle, leading to a cascade of events that claimed his life far too soon.

He leaves behind a constellation of family and friends who will forever carry his memory in their hearts. He is survived by his father, John Martin Nealis; a devoted brother, Joseph Patrick Nealis, and sister-in-law, Terri Nealis; beloved aunts Laura O'Brion and Patty O'Brion, Linda Menser; cherished cousins Joel and Jessie O'Brion, Rick and Randell Menser; and adored nephews Joseph Todd Nealis and Jacob O'Brion Nealis.

John is preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, Bert Edward O'Brion and Nancy Mick O'Brion; his mother Kay Ellen O'Brion; and his uncle Charles "Chuck" O'Brion.
