Judy Johan Hanford, age 83, of San Diego, was welcomed into the arms of Jesus on September 6, 2023, following a brave battle with Alzheimer’s disease. A faithful woman, Judy deeply loved the Lord, her family, and her community.
Born on May 16, 1940, Judy was lovingly raised by her parents, Mary-Alice and Richard, in San Diego. A proud alumna of Grossmont High School's Class of 1958, Judy also held the notable position of drum majorette. After graduation, she furthered her studies in business at San Diego State University for a year before embarking on her professional journey at General Dynamics as part of their secretarial pool.
In 1960, Judy and Walter Hanford's paths crossed, leading to a loving union that would span their entire lives, amounting to a remarkable 60 years. Their enduring and joyful marriage was a testament to their shared commitment and love. They were blessed with a daughter, Sheri Lowe. As devoted parents, they passionately supported Sheri's endeavors, particularly her love for ice skating, cheering her on every step of the way. This unwavering support was just one facet of their profound bond and dedication to their family.
Judy, ever the devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, took great pride in her volunteer efforts at Grossmont Hospital. As the years passed, she nurtured diverse passions including sewing, gardening, and country western dancing. Animals held a special place in her heart, particularly her adored dogs: Dollie and Alfie, both Yorkies, and Ginger and Chang, the Shih Tzus.
Judy was an exceptional grandmother who took great pleasure in showering her grandchildren with love and affection. Living close to her family, she was an ever-present figure in their lives. With unwavering support, she attended Holly's dance competitions and cheered on Brandon at his swim meets, always celebrating their achievements with boundless enthusiasm.
In her later years, Judy emerged as a late-blooming artist, delving into fine art painting. With a keen eye for the beauty of nature, she expertly captured animals, African wildlife portraits, tropical birds, and flowers. Her talents were showcased at the Foothills Art Gallery in La Mesa and the Southwestern Artist Association in the Spanish Village Art Center, Balboa Park, San Diego.
Judy's legacy and memory is lovingly carried forward by her cherished daughter Sheri, son-in-law Stephen Lowe, and her beloved grandchildren, Brandon and Holly. Now, as she rests with God, her memory will forever reside in the hearts of her family and all those she touched throughout her life.
