Kevin Patrick Morrison, 50, succumbed to his two and a half year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease on May 4, 2023 with his loving wife, Heather, by his side. Kevin is also survived by his four children, Jayce Patrick, 11, Jaylen Ross, 9, Myles Mitchell, 9, Mya Rae, 9, his mother Patricia, his brother, Justin, and his sister Geri Jones. He is preceded in death by his father Oscar.
Kevin was born August 6, 1972 in Los Angeles, California where he attended Our Lady of the Assumption and Damien High School in La Verne, California. He was a standout athlete on the basketball court at Damien and continued his athletic career at University of San Diego before transferring to Cal Poly Pomona.
He graduated from Cal Poly Pomona and went on to follow in his father’s footsteps working with at-risk youth at Boys Republic in a multitude of roles. He then went on to become a high school counselor, where he reentered the basketball world, this time as a coach. Kevin’s deep love for basketball led him to his role as President and Head Coach of the West Coast Elite AAU program where he helped over 70 players sign with Divison 1 teams, including 19 McDonald's All-Americans, 6 Gatorade State Players of the Year, and 1 Gatorade National Player of the Year. Kevin’s achievements with the West Coast Elite ushered him into coaching at the collegiate level where he had successful stops at UC Berkeley, 2007-2011, University of Washington 2011-2015, Georgia Tech, 2015-2018 and San Diego State, 2018-2020.
Kevin had a talent for making and keeping fast and loyal friendships, many of them lifelong and many others through his wife, Heather. He was well known for his witty jokes, contagious laugh, and bigger than life smile.
Even with all his professional successes, Kevin was most proud of his 12 year marriage to Heather and being a father to his 4 amazing children. The family he built was what sustained him after his devastating diagnosis. His primary concern was that his family would be loved and cared for after his tragic departure from this world. His children were the light of his life and his family’s love and devotion carried him through his battle. His wife and children lovingly stepped into the role of Kevin’s caregivers, helping to care for his every need, even to his final breath.
Kevin’s Celebration of Life will be held August 12, 2023 at St Luke’s Lutheran Church in La Mesa, Ca. Please RSVP here if you plan to attend
