Lawrence Brooks Ferguson
June 30, 1938- October 19, 2016
Lawrence Brooks Ferguson was born in San Diego June 30 1938. His life was an example of the best of men. He was a loving partner, brother, proxy Grandfather, friend and cousin. He expressed his love in so many ways and was loved in return.
Larry grew up in San Diego and graduated from San Diego High School. He served as Student Body President in this senior year and has maintained a wonderful relationship with many of his friends from all his school years.
Larry joined the Army July 1961 and was discharged July 1964. He traveled in Europe before coming home and that started his love for traveling. He and Ed traveled all over Europe, whether on cruise ship or on land. They met friends along the way, and continued those friendships to this day. Friendship was the gift that Larry gave to so many.
Larry attended UCLA before joining the Army and continued his education at SDSU when he returned. Even to this day he has maintained his friendships with some of the professors he met there. He worked for Nabisco stocking shelves, and went to class in the afternoon. He worked for Robinsons as Operations Manager, and moved to Target where, as Operations Manager, he set up the first 8 stores in San Diego.
Larry eventually completed his education and began teaching in September 1986 at Mount Miguel High School in the English Department. He earned his Master’s Degree in 1990. He served as head of the English Department. While teaching there, Larry took a group of students and parents to Europe, supervised the Self-Study Accreditation for the school, was awarded the Golden Apple Award and named Teacher of the year 2001-2002. He also taught German at Helix Adult Night School. He retired in 2003 after 17 years. Larry maintained a wonderful friendship with the retired teachers, and has attended their gatherings regularly.
Larry and Ed traveled extensively in the US. They often visited his brother Jack, his wife Diane, and their children, Carolyn and John. Their time in Cupertino and Northern California was the highlight of every summer, spending time with Sharlyn and her husband John. They also spent lots of time in New York City with friends that they met on a cruise and enjoyed many plays together. They traveled together seeing all the sights on the east coast and Mississippi Valley.
Larry met his goal of taking piano lessons and sat at the piano each day studying his lessons and mastering his talent. He enjoyed learning the pieces and the friendship with his teachers. For Larry life was all about relationships, and so many were blessed to spend time with him and be the recipient of his friendship.
Even when diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in 2015, Larry persevered and brought his weight and health back in a very determined way. He loved life and didn’t want to miss a minute of it. Larry passed from this world on October 19, 2016.
Larry will be missed by so many and remembered by Ed, his partner of 34 years, Ed’s family Ed III, Lorena, Nathan, and Jacob, Chris and Kim, and Peg. Also, his brother Jack and Diane and their family, the family of his brother Mike who preceded him in death, his cousins Sharlyn, John and Jim, Sandra and Bill, Pam, John and Angela, and Donna, and Bill.
