Luther “Red” Blevins 1/12/1931 - 4/9/2022
Red passed away on April 9th at his home in Columbia, California. He is survived by his daughter Jacqueline and his two sons Paul and Thomas. His health declined after a prolonged battle with congestive heart failure.
In his last days, his reflections on his life were warm and positive. He passed contently feeling that he led a full and meaningful life.
Red was an Alabama native raised on a cotton farm near Stevenson, Alabama. After reaching adulthood, he left the family farm and joined the Army. After serving for 2 years, he left the Army and found his true calling after enlisting in the US Navy, where he served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He became a commissioned officer in 1960 and progressed to the rank of lieutenant commander where he received his first command of a US Naval ship. After retiring from the Navy in 1977, he pursued a career in off-shore drilling/exploration and environmental clean-up. He retired in 1986.
Red raised a daughter and two sons in California. Everyone who met Red would remember him as someone who was welcoming, warm and caring. He was an avid football and old western movie fan. He is remembered by family and friends as a bright, generous, and thoughtful man who cared deeply about his work but never passed up an opportunity to make people laugh.
