Capt. Luther E. Mayes, Jr.
December 8, 1921-May 31, 2017
Retired member of the US Navy and loving family man passed away peacefully on May 31, 2017.
Born and raised in Oklahoma, he was appointed to the Naval Academy in Annapolis at 19. Trained as a submariner, who served his country for 30 years, he held a variety of positions, including Executive Officer of a submarine base and Commanding Officer of a submarine tender. His last assignment, Commander of Fleet Activities in Sasebo, Japan, was a challenging position that he very much enjoyed, especially because of the opportunity to interact and work with the Japanese people.
After retirement, he continued to work in various private sector industries for another 25 years. He was an avid hunter and dog-lover, who also occasionally enjoyed fishing.
Luther is preceded in death by his parents, Luther Sr. and Florence, his brother Charles, and his beloved wife Florene whom he married on July 1, 1945.
He is survived by his brother Harry, his daughters, Linda and Patricia (Kevin), and his son, Christopher (Jody).
Luther, your strength, love, generosity, smile and ready to laugh will be sorely missed.
A ceremony celebrating his life will be held at 10:30 am on August 4th, 2017 at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery. 1800 Cabrillo Memorial Dr. San Diego, CA 92106
