Manuel was born in San Diego in 1938, the youngest of four children. Manuel had an affinity for music and as a very young man went to great lengths to develop his drumming skills. He continued playing in local groups and singing in as many as three choirs simultaneously during his life.
He graduated from San Diego State University with a music major and later also obtained a Masters’ from San Diego State. The first position of his 37 year career with the Sweetwater Union Independent School District was a dream fulfilled, band director. He was also principal of three schools and completed his career with the District as an administrator.
He is survived by his wife, Kay Phillips, his three children, Tabitha (Gardner); Melinda (John); Jon (Marites); a step son David (Mari) and seven grandchildren, Sam, Susannah, Lily, Gigi, Caleb, Tessa and Sabrina. A brother, Eugene(Hazel), sisters, Angie and Elva.
A Celebration of Life will be held on October 14, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego, 4190 Front Street, San Diego, CA 92103.
