Maria Alda Seggie
March 30, 1938- January 17, 2025
Maria Alda was born on the Azores Island of Sao Miguel as the oldest child of four siblings and grew up on Santa Maria and Terceira islands. The American Military established Lajes Air Force base on Terceira and as luck would have it the stunningly beautiful Maria Alda, met and fell head over heels for the boyishly handsome Donald Ray (Don). They married and welcomed two children before venturing to the United States as a family. Don served in the US Air Force for over 20 years. Maria Alda was right by his side and always involved with her children’s activities and her own creative talents. Maria Alda was a gifted painter, able to crochet beautiful handcrafted pieces, and for many years ran her own ceramics business out of the family home. Many a weekend was spent setting up a tent and selling her beautiful ceramics at craft shows and street fairs. Maria Alda was a lover of nature and especially Hummingbirds. There was always a feeder outside her door ready to welcome any “Humminga” that was hungry. So if you see a Humminga, know that Maria Alda is with you in spirit.
Maria Alda passed away at her home, surrounded by her loved ones on January 17, 2025.
Maria Alda is survived by her two children Edna Maria (Patrick) and James Donald all of San Diego California. She is also survived by her sister Cidalia Etheridge of Florida, and countless numbers of nieces, nephews and other family members. In addition, although honorary, there are many that called her Grandma. How she loved to be called Grandma!
Maria Alda was preceded in death by her parents Cristiano and Amorinda Maiato, and two of her three siblings Carlos and Mario. They are all now up in heaven dancing, doing puzzle after puzzle and playing BINGO. As Maria Alda would say: BINGO, BINGO, BINGO!!!
The family extends deep gratitude to the many doctors, nurses and staff that cared for Maria Alda over the many years. And, for the final chapter of her life, to the Ivy Park @ Escondido and Comfort and Peace Hospice for providing loving care.
In lieu of flowers, if you would like to make a donation to your favorite charity, in honor of Maria Alda, that would be much appreciated. She is looking down on us with that glint in her green eyes and a big smile.
A private service and burial will be held at Miramar National Cemetery where she will join her husband of over 65 years forever.
