Mariam Zora was born in Madaba Jordan to Boulus and Saideh Kildani. She was the only daughter, adored by her four older brothers, one of whom became the archbishop of Nazareth for thirty years. They later moved to Jerusalem where Mariam attended the Pensionnat de Notre Dame de Sion School and Orphanage for Girls. She learned and spoke French fluently and was a skilled embroiderer.
She married Naoum Zora in 1949 and moved back to Madaba. They had four daughters and two sons but eventually settled in the United States for economic opportunities. Mariam and Naoum owned several restaurants and a delicatessen over the years and worked hard to provide for their family.
Mariam lost her husband in 1996 but was consoled by her children, grandchildren, and later, great- grandchildren. She enjoyed funny stories and jokes, cooking, playing cards with friends, traveling, and playing the slot machines. Her fun-loving ways and easy-going nature were endearing and remembered by all who knew her. She has left a void in our lives, but we know she is in heaven looking out for us. We will never forget you. May you rest in peace.
