Mary Carroll Hull passed away on 24 May 2015 from complications of a stroke suffered in 2006. Born in Ventura, CA on 31 July 1957, Mary Carroll was the daughter of a petroleum engineer and a stay at home mother. Her family moved around the western United States in the early part of her life, settling in Bakersfield, CA in 1969. She loved to travel, was an avid reader, high school honor student, and life long dog lover.
While studying at the University of California Irvine in the late 1970s, MC became interested in law enforcement and then became a campus police officer. Later, she was designated the first female K-9 police officer in California history, serving on the UCI and UCLA campuses. After an athletic injury precluded further promotion as a police officer, she entered the environmental health and safety field, working first at SDSU and then in private industry in the San Diego area.
As a stroke survivor, MC participated religiously in speech therapy at SDSU, assisting many graduate students in their study of speech pathology. As a long time peer visitor at the San Diego Rehabilitation Institute, stroke survivors were encouraged by her strong will to fight on.
With the help of two close friends, Mary Carroll was able to continue living a full life, travelling often and residing in her own home in the Rolando neighborhood she loved so dearly. Her compassion and generosity for family, neighbors, and friends will be forever missed.
Mary Carroll is preceded in death by her father, Theodore Hull and survived by her mother, Modesta Hull, and her brother, James Hull, all of Bakersfield. Several beloved canines also precede her in death, all truly part of her family.
MC’s family extends a special thank you to Richard and Lynette Fulton, devoted friends who stayed by her side. Services will be private.
