Mary Matisohn, much admired and adored by everyone who knew her, went home to be with our Lord on April 15th. She was born on November 29, 1954 in San Diego.
Mary’s hummingbird collection was appropriate to who she was; dainty, lovely, and always on the go. Mary was a hiking enthusiast and could be regularly found on trails in San Diego with her hiking friends. She also hiked all over the world from Ireland and Italy to Peru and New Zealand. Mary enjoyed traveling and loved spending time in Hawaii, Colorado, Montana, and loads of other places. Her favorite traveling companions were her sister and niece, other family members, and her best friend, Kay Young.
Mary was especially known for her passion for her family. She had recently devoted herself to caring for her father and her uncle. Mary always looked forward to attending the biennial Milton family reunions. She has left a legacy of showering her nieces, nephews and God-daughter with her love, devotion and generosity.
Mary retired from SDG&E in 2017 after a productive thirty-eight year career. She started in the Accounting department and ended up in Customer Project Planning where she was described by co-workers as a petite, energetic person often seen flitting around like a bird in her hard hat.
Mary had countless friends all of whom were recipients of her kind and thoughtful spirit. She was devoted to helping others feel important and included, and was always ready to lend a helping hand. For 12 years, Mary opened her home to her single friends for an in-depth Bible Study through her church. With this group she served her community in many ways. Mary had a living and authentic faith.
Mary is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Robert Strickland, her nieces and nephews, Anna, Mike, and Jonathan Strickland, Veronica and Zimry Benitez and their children, Ellie and Jesse Benitez; and many uncles, aunts and cousins.
Friends and family members are invited to attend her Celebration of Life service on Saturday, May 18 at 1:00 p.m. at College Avenue Baptist Church, 4747 College Ave., San Diego.
