Mary Jane Nigro

July 12, 1931 — June 12, 2019

Mary Jane Nigro, 87, of San Diego died from melanoma on June 12th, 2019. She was born on July 12, 1931 in Toledo, Ohio, the daughter of Karl & Ursula (McTigue) Delaney. She attended Notre Dame Academy high school and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from The University of Toledo in 1953.
In 1955 Mary Jane moved from Toledo to San Diego and began her teaching career as an elementary school teacher. Her independent spirit, friends and availability of jobs led Mary Jane to San Diego. In 1957 she was married to Louis Victor Nigro at Blessed Sacrament Church in Toledo.
Mary Jane was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and Mother’s Guild member for many years. She was an active volunteer at St. Vincent De Paul where she mentored children with their school work and reading. She was also a board member of the Del Cerro Park for several years and one of its founding members.
Mary Jane loved to spend time with her family and also loved playing bridge with friends and spending time at the beach. She continued to ride the waves on her boogie board well into her 80’s. She had a wonderful smile that would light up a room and spent many Fall Saturday’s cheering on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on the gridiron.
Mary Jane is survived by her son Larry and his wife Molly; son Stephen and his wife Carolyn, son Jim and his wife Lisa and daughter Virginia and her husband Matt; seven grandchildren (Jeffrey, Sarah, Melissa, David, Katie, Anna & Elena); sister Patricia Docis; five nephews and three nieces. In addition to her parents, her husband, Louis Nigro preceded her in death.
