Mary Therese Schraeder, 80, of Lakeside, California, passed away on July 6, 2022 following complications from a stroke.
Mary was born on September 16, 1941 in Tucson, Arizona to Fermin and Livia Montiel, the second of eight children. She graduated from Salpointe Catholic High School and received a bachelor’s degree in 1963 at the University of Arizona. She then moved to San Diego County where she worked as an elementary school teacher and bilingual education advocate for more than 40 years.
Mary was fierce in her love and devotion to family. She is survived by her husband, Dennis Schraeder (79), whom she married on July 20, 1968, and their three children: Charles Schraeder (53), married to Tammie Simonson Schraeder, Lia Schraeder (46), and Christopher Schraeder (42). She is also survived by her two grandchildren, Ian Schraeder (18) and Alyssa Schraeder (17) as well as her sisters and brothers and a large extended family.
Mary was an active presence in her community. She volunteered with hospice and was a court-appointed special advocate for youth. She participated in the Lakeside Garden Club, Lakeside’s River Park Conservancy, and the Republican Women’s Club San Diego County/Lakeside. She was devoted to her faith and served as a lector in her church, Our Lady of Perpetual Help for many years. She was also a member of the prayer group at St. Kieran Catholic Church.
Mary's love of travel brought her around the world. She took the pilgrimage to Santiago de Campostela in Spain, summited Acatenango volcano in Guatemala, and explored the ruins and history of the Holy Land in Israel. Her travels took her to Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Greece, Italy, Mexico, and throughout the U.S.
She will be remembered for her generosity to family, caring for others, strong sense of faith, integrity, positivity, and calm demeanor. Her good cooking nourished body and soul, her faith emanated gentleness and love, and her large succulent garden spread serenity and beauty.
Services will be held on July 23, 2022 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help church in Lakeside. Rosary will begin at 10:30 followed by memorial service at 11 and celebration of life at noon.
