Mary Jane Simons (1934-2021)
Mary Jane Simons, age 86 passed away January 9, 2021 at her home, Nazareth House Senior Living Community in San Diego, CA.
She was born on March 3, 1934 in Grand Rapids, MI.
She graduated from Bishop Noll Institute in Hammond, Indiana, then went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Education and a Master's Degree in History. She worked as an educator and in the social services field for many years.
Mary Jane enjoyed traveling and experiencing new cultures; in her younger years her explorations took her to Africa, Japan, and Australia, to name a few of her many destinations. Eventually she settled in La Mesa, but continued her travels throughout most of her life, with later trips focused on exploring her Catholic heritage with trips to historical Christian sites around the world.
Mary Jane was a dedicated Catholic her entire life. She took pleasure in singing with the choir of Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala and St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church. She volunteered at and supported many organizations. St. Vincent DePaul Village and D.E.L.T.A. Rescue (Dedication and Everlasting Love to Animals) were two of her favorites. Throughout her life, Mary Jane had many cat companions whom she dearly loved. She was a collector of antiques, pottery, artwork, memorabilia, and curios. She delighted in searching for items to add to her esteemed collections.
Survivors include her sister-in-law Jean Simons of Mt. Calvary, WI and many nieces and nephews spanning three generations.
She was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Marie Simons, an infant brother Al Simons, and her brother Richard Simons.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Nazareth House and her personal caregivers, especially Marisela and Frank, for all their care and compassion.
