Mary Szollosi passed away peacefully on July 22, 2019 in San Diego, California. Her daughters were at her side and her son had just “faced-timed” with her.
Mary was born on December 12, 1916 in Toledo, Ohio to John and Mary Szombati. She was 102 years old and the last surviving member of her generation in both her and her husband’s large families.
Mary met “Fritz” Szollosi at the St. Stephen’s Young Peoples Club. They married in 1941 and spent 68 years together, raising five children: MaryEllen Breister (Robert), Frank Szollosi (Marlene), Sharon Tully, Carol Findling (Dennis) and Anita L. Hooker (Lee).
When Fritz went to fight in WWII, Mary helped out by working at the Auto Light factory in Toledo, supporting the war effort.
After the war, Mary and Fritz were active in their church (St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic), and were exceptionally proud of their Hungarian heritage. Mary was an excellent cook and took joy in treating her family to “Sunday Soup”, Chicken Paprikas, Pigs in the Blanket and other delicious meals. She was also a gifted baker, creating legendary Hungarian pastries that melted in ones mouth. Mary was always warm and welcoming to anyone who dropped in.
Fritz and Mary traveled to Hungary many times to visit family there. They also enjoyed the Holy Land, Rio de Janeiro, Italy and Acapulco, Mexico. One year, Mary discovered Las Vegas and thereafter, took many trips there to gamble and enjoy shows like Tom Jones, Gladys Knight and Wayne Newton. Great times were spent at the Sands, The Frontier, The Golden Nugget and the Jockey Club.
In 1922, Mary and Fritz purchased a little piece of Paradise in Naples, Florida where they spent warm, sunny winters far from the Ohio snow for 15 years.
Mary was an exceptionally loving grandma. She willingly babysat for all ten of her grandchildren at one time or another. Mary was always there for her 5 children.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Fritz in 2009 and daughter, Anita Hooker in 2018. She is survived by her 4 adult children, 10 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She will be forever loved and mourned until we are all together again with Our Lord.
Mary's viewing will be held on Monday, July 29 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Featheringill Mortuary, 6433 El Cajon Blvd, San Diego
