Michael Lawrence Cyr, 70, passed away peacefully on Oct. 24, 2024, at his home in San Diego, surrounded by his loving family.
Mike — as he was commonly known by those close to him — lived most of his life in the Northeast, spending the last few decades in New Hampshire. As a young man, he served in the United States Marine Corps and would wear that badge proudly for the rest of his life, always exchanging a deep “oorah” when he’d encounter a fellow Marine. A Maine native and University of Maine alum, he met the woman who would be his wife of 40 years, Faith, in Carlsbad, California, before the couple relocated back east to raise a family. He proceeded to dedicate more than four decades to his career as a computer hardware product manager until retiring in 2021.
An avid sports fan and lifelong golfer — holder of 4 hole-in-ones, which are marked on a trophy adorning his bureau — Mike believed in hard work and perseverance. A loving father and fierce competitor (from backyard cornhole to drive-way basketball), Mike instilled those virtues in his three sons. Golfing great Bobby Jones once said, "Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots, but you have to play the ball where it lies,” and that was the mantra Mike seemed to embody.
Above all, his passion for life and family was evident in all he did. He was dependable and kind and never missed a chance to crack off a zinger from his trademark dry wit. He will be so dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife, Faith (Sheldon) Cyr; sons Kevin Cyr and wife Jeana McKenney, Shawn Cyr and wife Cassie Cyr, along with grandson Cameron Cyr. He was preceded in death by his son, Gregory Cyr. Michael is also survived by his siblings, Richard VonIderstine and Melinda Kilpatrick.
A memorial service for Michael will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 5 pm at Featheringill Mortuary in San Diego. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Michael’s memory may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
