Obituary for Neva Anna Harnly (Hensley)

Neva Anna Harnly of San Diego passed away with her family at her side September 17, 2014. Born in Fairview, Kansas, on November 29, 1921, she was the daughter of Edgar Elbert Hensley and Anna Johanna Berthalena Larsen-Hensley. Neva graduated from Lincoln High School in 1939, where she met Herbert Smith Harnly. They were married in 1941 in the First Presbyterian Church on Date Street in San Diego. Neva worked for Consolidated Aircraft until 1945, when she and her husband moved back to Nebraska. They soon returned to San Diego residing in Pacific Beach and later Bay Park. Neva worked in the composing room for the Union-Tribune. She retired from the U-T after 32 years. She was an Eastern Star for over 50 years. Neva was very active in her family life. She enjoyed cooking for family get togethers and was probably the Martha Stewart of her time. She liked to tell the story when her father who was a Rock Island Railway Company employee, gave her a return ticket to Lincoln if she was not happy in California. She never used the ticket. Neva is survived by her sons Michael, his wife Sara, of Del Mar; and Steve, his wife Diane, of Scripps Ranch; daughter Pamela, her husband James Oliver, of Linda Vista; grandchildren Christopher, Steve II, Brigette, Alexandra; great grandchildren Gabrielle, Samuel, Wyatt, Luke, Nicolette, Corbin; and nieces Joyce Froyck and Sandy Anglin of Chula Vista. She is remembered as a beautiful, fun-loving wife, mother, auntie, grandma and great-grandma. Cremated remains were placed in Columbarium niche at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
