Paul Edward Girard, 81, of San Diego, California passed away on March 15, 2024, after extended illness. Paul passed peacefully, in anticipation of reuniting with his beloved late wife, Diana.
Paul was born on March 5, 1943, to Edward and Dorothy Girard of Miami, Florida. Paul attended St. Patrick and Columbus High Schools, and was valedictorian at both. After graduating high school Paul went on to attend the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1965. Paul went on to earn a PhD from the Naval Postgraduate Academy, specializing in electronics engineering and weapons engineering. After 23 years in the Navy Paul retired in San Diego as a Naval Commander and continued his career in the private defense industry.
Paul enjoyed telling the story of meeting his future wife, Diana (Goad) Girard. While serving on ship duty following graduation from the Naval Academy, he accompanied a friend to his girlfriend’s apartment and caught her roommate (Diana) completely by surprise. He said it was love at first sight, and they were married in April of 1968. They were married for nearly 36 years, until Diana’s untimely passing. Paul remained in love with Diana until the day he died.
Paul was an avid performer and supporter of barbershop harmony singing and participated in several quartets and choruses in the San Diego area and participated in many contests. In the years prior to his passing, he was a strong advocate and tireless supporter of youth participation in harmony singing, and his efforts and contributions continue to support youth singing programs.
Paul is predeceased by his wife Diana Girard of San Diego, and his parents Edward and Dorothy Girard. He is survived by brother-in-law David Goad and wife Carla of Stillwater, Oklahoma, and nephews Michael Goad and Andrew Goad, and nieces Elizabeth Goad and Carrie Lariviere.
Paul was a true dog lover as well, and is predeceased by furry friends Blackie, Duchess, Whitey (the rat), Emanon (the cat), Foxy, Chin-Chin, Dutch, Blackie, RUS, Molé and Frosty. His most recent friend, Shelby, died 2 weeks after Paul’s passing.
A military funeral service is planned for 9:30 AM on Friday May 3, 2024, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, where he will be interred with his late wife Diana. In lieu of flowers, contributions to local humane societies are encouraged.
