Paul William Whitehead
Chula Vista, California
07/20/1928-04/18/2015
Paul was born in Freedom, Kentucky, in 1928. He was the second of four siblings. He died from complications of cardiopulmonary disease. He was under the loving care of his nurses, doctors, and healthcare workers in his room at the Chula Vista Veterans Home, and the Vitas Hospice Nurses. He enjoyed his last months working on his garden and various woodworking and leather projects in the woodshop, and his weekly visits to Southwestern Yacht Club, his real home.
He is survived by his three children, Michael (Cristy), Rebecca (Rick), and Jeffrey (JIll), and his granddaughters, Jade and Hannah Fabares.
Paul had many friends and family and led a full and happy life. He worked on the Alaskan Pipeline as a chef for a crew of 70. He loved to travel, especially road trips. He served in the United States Army as a young man, going to boot camp in Scott Field, Illinois, and studying, and then teaching radio engineering. He then moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where he attended school, and then started a family. He eventually moved to San Diego, California, where he raised his family. He was a general contractor building many homes and commercial buildings throughout southern California and the southwestern United States. For a time, he lived the life of a cowboy, a lifelong dream, on the ranch in Pierre, South Dakota.
But mostly, he loved boats and the water, whether it is the ocean, a lake, a river, or a stream. He was a proud member of Southwestern Yacht Club in Point Loma, San Diego, California for over 45 years. In 1982, he was Staff Commodore. He owned, built, traded, repaired, raced, and lived aboard many boats during his lifetime. He will be sadly missed by his many, many friends and loved ones at SWYC.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn (Edie Pavey), and survived by his brother, Stan (Madge), and his sister Peggy Edwards, and many nieces and nephews.
His ashes will be scattered at sea near Point Loma.
