Richard (Dick) Alan Holmes
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard (Dick) Alan Holmes on March 10, 2022 after more than a 45-year struggle with Multiple Sclerosis.
Born on November 29, 1945 in Council Bluffs, lowa, to Gerald and Ruth Holmes, Dick was six months old when the family moved to San Diego, California, where he lived the rest of his life. He graduated in 1964 from Mt. Miguel High School, joined the Marines in 1966 and spent a tour in Vietnam. He married Jo Ann Rank in 1968 and had three children.
Dick began his career at Big Bear Markets after the military and took advantage of the Gl bill to received his marketing degree. He eventually bought his own grocery market in Spring Valley and then in Bonita. When his illness became debilitating, he sold his store and stayed home to take of the kids. He was a devoted father who became involved in his children's activities. He also volunteered with St. Vincent de Paul at his church.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Ruth Holmes. He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann of 53 years, son Michael Holmes (Mary), daughter Kristina Cole (Matt), daughter Heather Holmes (Bill), grandchildren Martin, Mason, Sullivan, Thadeus, Zilphia and Adalee, sister Kathleen Dunmeyer, brother in-law Philip Dunmeyer, sister-in-law Diane Fowler, and brother-in-law James Fowler.
A celebratory mass is pending at this time.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or to St. Vincent de Paul Village.
