Richard Lee Tinsley

Richard Lee Tinsley (Dick), 76, of San Diego, passed away on July 31, 2023, after a long battle with cancer

Richard was born on November 21, 1946, to Leroy and Ruth Tinsley in Somerville, Massachusetts. Richard graduated from Bishop Fenwick High School, Peabody , Massachusetts in 1964. He began his college education at Boston College but enlisted in the US Navy before graduating. After 4 years in the Navy, Richard continued his college studies at University of San Diego and National University, San Diego, where he graduated Magna cum Laude in 1978. After graduating with a degree in Business Administration he worked as Assistant Sales Operations Manager for Frazee Paint Co.

He was happiest when he was “fixing” things and working with machines. He learned how to service and repair industrial and home sewing machines. He enjoyed working on cars and various motors. His favorite job was working at La Mesa RV in sales of parts for recreational vehicles.

In 1969, Richard met Susan Powell. They were married in 1972 and had three children: Katherine Ella, Richard Lee Jr., and James Leman.

In 2014, Richard retired and spent his time camping, adopting older dogs, and making things with his 3D printer and laser printer. He also became active in several bridge groups. But his very favorite thing to do was to be with his grandchildren.

Richard was predeceased by his parents, Leroy and Ruth Tinsley, and his sister, Patricia Tinsley. He is survived by his wife: Susan (Powell) Tinsley; three children: Katherine Brignano (Scott), Richard Tinsley, Jr. , and James Tinsley; three grandchildren: Miles Finn Tinsley, Ella Sara Brignano, and Everly Ruth Brignano.

Services will be held at St. Therese Catholic Church, on August 18, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Theresa Catholic Church, 6409 St. Therese Way, San Diego, CA, 92120 or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Inurnment with military honors will be at a later date at Miramar National Cemetery
