Richard Wayne Ward of Lakeside, California died August 9, 2016 at home with his family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Richard was born January 23, 1946 to George Robert Ward and Lola Inez Patrick Ward at Balboa Naval Hospital, San Diego, California.
Richard and his twin sister Carrol Sue, and his brother George, lived in Ocean Beach, California with their parents during his elementary and junior high years. He attended Ocean Beach Elementary School and Dana Junior High School. The family then moved to La Mesa, California where Richard attended Helix High School. He lettered in wrestling, but Richard’s athletic passion was surfing.
Richard met the love of his life, Janis Papike, at Helix High School. They dated for four years and were married August 5, 1967. Richard was drafted into the army during the Vietnam War and he and Janis moved to Germany where Richard served as a Specialist 2 in finance.
After returning to California, their son Sean was born January 19, 1970 and daughter Shannon was born January 27, 1972. The family moved to Lakeside, California in 1973 and lived in the same house for more than 43 years.
Richard owned his own business “Rain-Rite” before being employed in 2001 by the City of Chula Vista as an Open Space Inspector. He was employed to the last day of his life.
Richard loved snow-boarding, surfing, wake surfing, skiing, Hobie sailing and generally loved all sports. He
was an avid gardener and coached Little League Baseball and Junior Wrestling for years.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Janis, son Sean, daughter Shannon (Steve), sister Sue, brother George (Andrea), nephews, nieces, cousins and all who loved him.
Richard was a gentle man who lived a good life. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a caring son and brother, and was committed to his extended family and friends. He served his country and his community and made a lasting impression on all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
A celebration of life will be held August 27, 2016 at 11 a.m., at the Santee Civic Center Building 8P, 10601 Magnolia Avenue, Santee, CA.
